The layers of history here are staggering. We wandered the old section of Cairo including the Coptic churches nearby. They believe that Mary, Joseph & baby Jesus escaped to Egypt and hung out in caves in this area, hiding out from the authorities. The church imagery shows the holy family, plus ceilings representing the ark. Tomorrow we head into the Islamic area of the city and the tent maker alley.
Because we are traveling with Jeff, our tour included the garbage city in Cairo.
We ended the day sailing in a falucca on the Nile at sunset. Families gathered at riverside restaurants as the sun set, anticipating breaking their fasting for the day.
