Into the mountains

We have walked up into mountains west of Astorga.  The pilgrims greatly outnumber the local residents in these remote areas.  Of great interest to me is the hobbit-like structure we stumbled into in the village.  We are staying in the renovated convent next door.

Amidst the meseta continued...

We have figured out that the few beds available in this region for pilgrims must be reserved beforehand.  Thus I find myself in a bunk room with 11 men, shared toilet & shower.  This must be authentic, as we race to wash out clothes & ourselves before a shared meal.
Ah, buen Camino!

In the midst of the meseta

We are wandering the high plateau area of Spain, known as the meseta.  It's a fabulous way to see the sun rise, as we start our days by headlamp at dawn.  We're in Castrojeriez tonight, and the aubergue has a community meal shared in the garden.
The landscape here inspires the imagination 👣👣
Note to self:  this is much harder than I thought; it's also the best thing I could be doing.

Burgos to the Meseta

We traveled by bus to Burgos, knowing that we needed to leap over some kilometers to meet deadlines to reach Santiago.  Leaving Burgos behind, there are wide open spaces at higher altitudes.  Well worth the uphill walking, and will be similar for the next few days.
Buen Camino!

On the trail to Pamplona: day 7

On the way to Pamplona, we found that distance & altitude truly are relative.
